Focus and Scope

SIGMA is a scholarly journal dedicated to advancing knowledge, theory, research, and practice in Mathematics Education. The journal publishes empirical research, research and development studies, conceptual and theoretical papers, and scholarly literature reviews that contribute substantially to the advancement of mathematics education across educational contexts.

The journal covers mathematics education at primary, lower secondary, upper secondary/vocational, and higher education levels. Particular attention is given to strategic and emerging issues in mathematics teaching and learning, curriculum development, assessment, mathematical competencies, mathematics teacher education, educational technology, and contemporary developments in mathematics education.

Peer Review Process

Manuscripts that meet the initial requirements will undergo peer review by at least two qualified reviewers with relevant expertise in the subject area of the manuscript. The review process is conducted objectively, independently, and with a primary focus on the scholarly quality of the manuscript.

Before peer review, the editor may conduct a desk evaluation to assess:

  1. the manuscript's alignment with the journal's Focus and Scope;
  2. the novelty and relevance of the research topic;
  3. the manuscript's scholarly contribution to mathematics education;
  4. the quality of the manuscript's structure and content;
  5. the appropriateness of the research methodology;
  6. the quality of data analysis and discussion;
  7. compliance with the journal's author guidelines; and
  8. adherence to publication ethics.

Manuscripts that do not meet the journal's basic requirements may be desk rejected without being sent for peer review. Manuscripts that pass the initial editorial screening will be forwarded to qualified reviewers for substantive evaluation.

Editorial Decisions

Based on the peer-review reports, the editor may make one of the following decisions:

  1. Accept — the manuscript is accepted for publication with no revision or only minor editorial adjustments;
  2. Minor Revision — the manuscript requires limited revisions in accordance with the recommendations of the editor and/or reviewers;
  3. Major Revision — the manuscript requires substantial revision and may be returned to the reviewers for further evaluation; or
  4. Reject — the manuscript is not suitable for publication because it does not meet the journal's scientific, methodological, substantive, or ethical standards.

The final publication decision rests with the Editor-in-Chief and/or designated editor, taking into consideration the peer-review reports, scholarly quality, relevance to the journal's Focus and Scope, and applicable editorial and publication standards.

Revision does not guarantee acceptance. A revised manuscript may be returned to the reviewers for further evaluation when the editor considers additional substantive verification necessary.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

Publication Frequency

SIGMA is published twice a year (biannually), in March and September.
